Common problems can occur with:

THE HEAD GASKET

From Wikipedia: A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head(s) in an internal combustion engine. Its purpose is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders; as such, it is the most critical sealing application in any engine, and, as part of the combustion chamber, it shares the same strength requirements as other combustion chamber components.

Think of it this way – the head gasket in your engine does a (somewhat) similar job that a rubber washer does in a tap – it prevents leaks and ensures that the pressure isn’t lost due to such leaks.

Your head gasket also works to ensure that the three key fluids that drive your engine are kept separate. These fluids are:

  1. Your combined fuel / air mixture
  2. Your coolant
  3. Your oil
If there is a fault with a gasket and any of these fluids mix serious engine damage can occur. Watch out for smokey exhaust fumes – this can mean a gasket has failed and that your coolant and / or oil is mixing with your fuel internally in your engine.
Such damage can occur when coolant levels are incorrect, where there are leaks in the gasket, or where there is thermostat failure.
